Delicious, Chocolaty Decadence

Delicious, Chocolaty Decadence

After college, when my dreams for getting a job in Philly were dashed, I retreated back home to central PA where I had very few friends and little social life. This is when, against my better judgement, I got heavily involved in a Brazilian soap opera. Yep, you heard that right. Honestly, it was kind of addictive. Needless to say, this was also one of my most unproductive times. But, one good thing came out of it, I was introduced to the easiest, most adorable dessert: brigadeiro.

Now friends, if you’ve never had these chocolate gems, you are missing out! They are made with three ingredients, and are kind of a cross between fudge and a chocolate truffle. While being a relatively new invention (1945 to be exact), they have become an iconic Brazilian dish. And the recipe could not be easier!

Brigadeiro

Makes approximately 1 dozen small brigadeiros

Ingredients:

1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk

2 tbsp butter

4 tbsp cocoa powder (preferably dutch process)

Sprinkles or cocoa powder for coating*

Method:

  1. Place all three ingredients in a heavy bottomed pot and heat on low stirring until melted and well combined.

  2. Once combined turn the heat up to medium/medium high. While stirring constantly, heat mixture for about 10 minutes until thick (should be reduced in volume to about half). You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture easily pulls away from the sides.

  3. Transfer to a greased (or lined) plate and leave until cool to the touch

  4. Once cool but not set, grease your hands (preferably with more butter) and shape the mixture into small balls, about the size of a grape. Roll these balls in cocoa powder or sprinkles.

  5. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Sprinkles are traditional, but I think that cocoa powder adds a much needed hit of bitterness

  • Knowing when it’s ready may take some trial and error. Don’t give up! They are just as delicious topped with fruit or nuts and eaten with a spoon.
